Adult Director

An adult director, or adult filmmaker, is a person who directs the making of a porn film. An adult director visualizes the script, controlling a film's artistic and dramatic aspects, while guiding the technical crew and porn stars in the fulfillment of their vision.

However, adult directors do not in all countries have absolute artistic control. The director can also be selected by the producer. The producer can in this case have veto power over everything from the script itself to the final cut of the movie, often in anywhere from slight to extreme opposition to the director's vision.

When directing episodes for a TV show, a adult director's responsibilities are somewhat diminished, as the visual look and feel of the series is established, usually by the person billed as the show's executive producer. Those directors who choose or are chosen to work in TV have had to accept that they will not be as lauded, or as well-paid, as their big-screen counterparts.

Most copywriters work as employees within organizations such as advertising agencies, public relations firms, web developers, company advertising departments, large stores, broadcasters and cable providers, newspapers and magazines. Copywriters can also work as independent contractors freelancing for a variety of clients, at the clients' offices or working from home.

A copywriter usually works as part of a creative team. Agencies and advertising departments partner copywriters with art directors. The art director has ultimate responsibility for visual communication and, particularly in the case of print work, may oversee production. Copywriters are similar to technical writers, and the careers may overlap. Broadly speaking, however, technical writing is dedicated to informing readers rather than persuading them. For example, a copywriter writes an ad to sell a car, while a technical writer writes the operator's manual explaining how to use it.

Because the words sound alike, copywriters are sometimes confused with people who work in copyright law. The careers are unrelated.

Famous copywriters include David Ogilvy, William Bernbach and Leo Burnett. Many creative artists spent some of their career as copywriters before becoming famous for other things, including Dorothy L. Sayers, Viktor Pelevin, Eric Ambler, Joseph Heller, Terry Gilliam, Salman Rushdie, Don DeLillo, Lawrence Kasdan and Shigesato Itoi. (Herschell Gordon Lewis, on the other hand, became famous for directing violent exploitation films, then retired to become a very successful copywriter.)

The Internet has expanded the range of copywriting opportunities to include web content, ads, commercial emails and other online media. At the same time, the Internet has made it easier for employers, copywriters and art directors to find each other. Whereas professional freelance copywriters were once rare (except those between full-time jobs), today freelancing is a more viable job option, particularly in certain copywriting specialties and markets.

Additional educational opportunities have also emerged. However, while schooling may be a good start or supplement in a budding copywriter's professional education, working as part of an advertising team arguably remains the best way for novices to gain the experience and business sense required by many employers, and expands the range of career opportunities.

How to make a Porn Movie

There are various reasons why some of you may want to shoot your own porno video scenes. For one thing, it's fun. Shooting (a) sex video is a voyeuristic sex act for the camera operator. when they are strongly connected to the action in front of them. This is not necessarily or even often the case in commercial video production, where the camera operator has a lot on his or her mind besides their own enjoyment. Plus, the scene they're shooting may not be very erotic due to the detached performances of the actors or because the scene is often broken up into short segments (at least in the more professional productions) to make it easier to control all the filmic elements. But in the more intimate and emotionally charged setting of your bedroom or kitchen table, a playful video shoot may be a special sexual treat.

Other people interested in making their own porn may want to watch it later, to be turned on by their own sexual escapades, reliving a moment with or without the company of the original participants. Nothing could better represent their own experience on screen.

Some people like to shoot videos of themselves and swap with "swingers" across the country, accumulating hot, personal documents and knowing it's all real. This is actually how the amateur business got started.

Still others may want to enter the amateur or professional porno business (a whole new level of competition and avariciousness), with a fresh vision, an artful skill, energetic new faces, or just an unusual-looking piece of garbage for the media sewer. A whole book could be written for the hopeful video entrepreneur, but we can't cover all that here. If you want to get into the business, you will need to do your own research appropriate to the particular path you want to take. How you work depends on who you are personally. You could start a lesbian video art collective-making production decisions by consensus, or you could pay starving art students fifty bucks for a blowjob while you point the camera downwards. You could put ads for your mail order business in radical sex 'zines, or get paid bottom dollar to hand your footage over to Joe Blow's amateur porn company. The possibilities are too vast to detail in this chapter, so I will limit myself to imparting tips on how to shoot good material.

I recently reported on a "professional" shoot where some of the hints I will give below would have been useful. Sometimes I've seen beautiful people having hot sex, and the technical ineptitude reduces the experience to murky glop on the video screen. (And of course I've also seen the opposite, where boring sexual fakery was lensed by consummate professionals.) I hope that the readers will strive to preserve the magic of the sex they shoot, so it heats the viewer as much as it does the participants.

I also assume that everyone involved in these little videos will treat each other's public image with consideration, and not get into situations that some public figures have regretted when their bedroom documentaries are broadcast on television, or sold everywhere on the Internet. If you intend to sell or exhibit the video, get signed releases. Examples of these are in books on filmmaking, but they basically just say "I give you permission to use my image however you want."

Shoot what you want to see, and you know it will be fun to see later. Since you are erotically involved, turn into a voyeur who sees it all through the limited rectangle of the video viewfinder. Concentrate on getting your visual rocks off through that hole, so that you make the camera the desiring eye that needs to see all the good stuff. And get some idea of what that stuff is. When a woman has an orgasm, where in her body does she express it? Is it nicer to see a guy arch his back when he comes, or do you want to see where the jizz lands? Can you stand to pull away from the penetration shot for a moment to catch the expressions on their faces? Maybe the view from between the legs, with the camera at arms length, is better than any you could get from standing above. (This last one is a shot I personally love; where you get the squishy stuff in the foreground, the wincing faces in the back ground, and a landscape of skin in between. Plus, it gives an excuse to get within inches of the action.)

A special trick is to flip up or remove the eyepiece from the viewfinder (if you can do this with your camera) so that you can hold the camera out away from you and still see the little image. This allows shots pointing directly down when you can't stand above, etc. Many camcorders have viewfinders you can tilt and position in different directions, making how you hold the camera more variable and versatile.

Another way to shoot without looking into the viewfinder is to connect the camera to the TV and watch that from across the room. This is especially useful if you are in the scene itself and want to get angles from points of view other than your own. Say you are fucking with the camera in your hand, and want the angle from the side to get a better look at the penetration. Either set the focus to the distance you think it needs to be, or better use autofocus if it works that close (some camera lenses need to be set to "macro" to get closer than a couple feet). Look at the TV and move the camera in one hand to the desired location. You can adjust the focus and iris just as you would through the viewfinder. Use the TV as the guide, coordinating your hand and arm movements through it exclusively. You now have an instant porno movie that you can watch and be in at the same time! A new sexual act mediated by technology!

Speaking of point of view, it can be erotic to see things from the other person's viewpoint. The camera can be traded between partners, so that they finally know what it's like to be the other person, at least visually. Done live with the camera connected to the TV, this can be a mind-bending, out-of-body experience. It's a technological way to be in your partner's body in real time, without the expense and trouble of plastic surgery. Or simply make whole scenes from each person's viewpoint, so that you can talk about your experience in full later, filling in the juicy emotional details.

Remember that one main point of the sex is to get it on video, so playing to the camera is OK, as is being absorbed in the image on the TV as someone has sex with you. You may seem preoccupied with something that's not them, but in fact you are experiencing sex with them in a new and exciting way. Making the video is sex too.

Lighting

While it's easy and fun to just roll the camera for an hour or so and let that be the video, editing can be a new dimension in enjoyment. You can take the best scenes from previous videos, or create a whole scripted movie of your own. Fantasy scenarios can make excellent premises for porno movies, and usually are. Shooting scenes that lead up to sex provides some lead-in to the sex, creating anticipation and excitement. And, if you shoot the sexy talk and fondling and kissing that often precedes actual sex, you will be doing more than most of the professional porno movie dreck-tors in that regard.

Video editing is a re-recording process, which can be done with two VCR's or a computer. With two VCR's, the selected part of the original video plays on one, and is re-recorded on the second. Then the next desired part of a video is recorded right after that and so on. Making the clips of video match without a momentary tearing of the screen is accomplished with the second (recording) VCR being one that has a "flying erase head", a common feature on higher end home machines. Many of the better machines have special editing features, described in their manuals. Some of them have special inputs for a separate edit controller box, which talks to both VCR's at once and coordinates their motions. With this kind of setup you can make smooth edits with time precision down to a fraction of a second, which is good enough in many cases.

Many computers now come with video inputs and outputs, or reasonably inexpensive expansion boards can be purchased to provide video connections. With this type of board, editing software, and a large internal hard disk or accelerated external disk array, you can precisely edit video, do visual effects, titles, fancy transitions, morphing, etc.. Watch out though, because a budding enthusiast can blow his or her savings very quickly on more and more "necessary" toys. Lower cost video inputs have lower image quality than you could get with two S-VHS VCR's. The advantage of lower quality is that you don't use up your hard disk space as quickly, as this is the primary limitation of this technique. Video represents a huge flow of data, as the typical data rates are several megabytes per second. A compromise might be to use the computer only for titles, fancy transitions (changing between scenes by overlapping them somehow), and morphing your dick to huge proportions, and use the VCR's for most of the running time in the video.

As you can see, you can get into shooting and editing your own sex productions as an occasional pastime or as a major hobby. You may even find that you can make better videos than most of the ones you can rent at the store. Don't forget that amateurs have had a major impact on the development of the porno industry. Plus, the equipment you can buy for a reasonable price is getting better all the time. With motion pictures being distributed on the Internet (in low quality now, but that's improving) as well as on video, you can share your images in new, accessible, low cost ways. Whether dive deeply into this field or just diddle, er, dabble, there will be the fun of creativity and a new way of playing with sex.

The lights used can be whatever you have in the room, but usually this is not enough for video. Bring in lights from other parts of the house, or go the extra mile and obtain some just for your productions. The more light sources there are, the more even the light will be, but you can also overload the outlets and blow fuses, not to mention the uncomfortable heat. (I've been on porn shoots where I wanted to take my clothes off, not to go fuck the performers, but just because I was sweating so much I steamed up the viewfinder and couldn't see.) Quartz lamps with a few hundred watts are very useful, especially the stand-up ones that light up the ceiling for a nice even light. Clip-lights with floodlamps in them are cheap and versatile and can go anywhere you need them. Most incandescent home lamps are more orange in color than quartz lamps, and you'll notice this quickly on the video. Quartz lamps are also more efficient, so one high power quartz lamp is better than several low power regular lamps. Fluorescent lights can work, but some have colors that look bad on skin, and worse on video. For very low light situations, a good color fluorescent fixture can be a cool, compact, broad area light source that's not too harsh when it's right next to people.

Harsh, direct light streaming from focused lighting equipment looks awful on human skin. All wrinkles, blemishes, hairs and zits stand out because they cast sharp shadows. You sometimes see this in photos of grizzled old people, when the photographer wants them to look grizzled and old. A more "flattering" light is called "soft" light, which filters through a diffusing cloth, or bounces off a nearby white surface. This is what you always see in glamour and fashion photos. The key thing is that the source of light as it would appear from the point of view of the actor's wrinkle, is a broad area like the whole ceiling, rather than a small point like the front of the floodlamp. A common way to light porno is to point powerful lights at the white walls, ceiling, or white cardboard cards near the actors, so that the light is even over the whole area where they'll have sex. That way, you don't have dark areas where there might be a precious genital and you can't see it. This technique wastes lots of light, so one either has to have tons of light power, or a sensitive camera (which most of the consumer cameras are).

Another nice thing to do for humans is give them light which is a little like their skin color already. This tends to even out the person's skin color, hiding the minute differences in tone that are hideous to those seeking universal perfect beauty. Also, the person's skin will reflect most of the light that falls on it, giving them more of a "healthy glow". Filter colors for skin colors from "white" to "black" usually range from light peach color to orange. You can get different colored plastic filters in theatre or cinema supply stores, with a wide range of colors. These are made to go over the face of the light fixture, and don't melt easily. Ordinary wooden clothes pins are used by film and video pros to clip the filters on their lights. Don't make the mistake of putting tape on a hot light, only to have to smell burning plastic the rest of the day.

Note that when you white balance (telling the camera "this here is white, OK?") you can either do it in the colored light, making the scene seem as if it was shot in white light, or you can balance with an uncolored light, to keep the sense of warmly colored light. Play with the light and the camera, looking at the TV connected to the camcorder on a tripod (hey! we've found a use for it!). Just hook the video outputs on the camcorder directly to the video inputs on the TV, or you may have to go through your VCR first. Then just see what looks good. But beware that film crews spend many hours getting the light right, and you should do this at a time when you don't need to maintain the erotic mood.

If you are going to use the TV as a monitor for setting the lighting, it had better be adjusted right. Otherwise you will make the camera and lighting wrong to get the image to look right on your wrongly adjusted TV. The most easily available good signal is a broadcast television show with a strong signal, or a cable show. Choose a variety of scenes, with faces in natural light, outdoor scenes, and scenes with some areas you know should be white. If you can adjust the saturation (or color), hue (or tint), brightness, and contrast to a setting where a variety of scenes look the way you know they should, then you are pretty close.

A video camera will make all the tones and colors more harsh than they are to your eye, so make things somewhat more bland and even than you think just from visual judgment. Again, looking at the TV while you set up will tell you the real story right away. Note that if you intend to copy the tape or edit it by a copying process, the color saturation and contrast (harshness) will get worse, so you might tone it down even more. A particular problem is the color of pure red, which makes scintillating smears in subsequent copies, and which is avoided by video specialists. Other super saturated (pure) colors can also be a problem.

Watch out for cloth material with closely spaced stripes, as these can approximately match the lines of the video image, creating magic rainbows that move and wiggle across the striped area. As with everything, play with this so you get the idea and know what to expect. Playing is learning.

The Camera

The central piece of video equipment is of course the camera. If you are considering buying a camcorder, you can get certain features that are advantageous for shooting sex. One feature is image stabilization. This helps reduce the jitteryness of the image when the camera is handheld (which I recommend , see below). Optical image stabilization uses a movable prism in the lens, and is better than electronic image stabilization which reduces the overall picture quality. Electronic stabilization also makes it hard to do camera moves, because it "sticks" on the image and jerks away rather than moving smoothly with the camera. Mechanical stabilizers with arms and weights work well when you practice with them, but they are in the way when you want to get in close to people or shoot straight downwards or between legs or right at the level of the bed etc., so I do not recommend those for this kind of shooting.

You should get a camera with good wide-angle coverage in the zoom lens or get a wide angle adapter to screw onto the existing lens to make the field of view as wide as possible without distortion. This also helps you when hand holding the camera, because small jitters are less visible in extreme wide angle. Be sure that the wide angle adapter doesn't cut off the corners of the image when the camera is zoomed out all the way, as cheap ones can. Test before you buy. The camera should be able to produce a good image in relatively low light, as you may not want to blast all your scenes with movie lights. You should get a camera that lets you control the exposure and focus manually, so you aren't at the mercy of the camera's automatic misjudgment.

Image quality is a you-get-what-you-pay-for item, with the best and highest priced cameras featuring three image chips instead of one (which really makes a huge difference in color and resolution). Some consumer cameras now record in a digital format, which reproduces perfectly what was recorded on it and reduces noise and other problems associated with the usual ways of recording video. This also makes it possible to transfer high quality images into your computer through a relatively cheap add-on card, as opposed to a more expensive card with high quality video inputs. More about editing later.

I do not like tripods for shooting sex. If you are shooting something that doesn't move, like a landscape, a tripod is appropriate because it doesn't move either. When shooting people that move in unplanned ways, they will either have to arrange themselves just right in front of the tripod-mounted camera, or you will have to remove it from the tripod and go after them. I have seen too many hot amateur scenes made static and distant by the unmoving aloofness of the stationary camera, or by the actors' knowledge that they had better only do what the camera can see. Almost all professional porno sex scenes are now shot hand held, because that puts you right in the scene. The permission to do this came from the amateur video phenomenon via some innovative directors (of porno and mainstream movies and TV) who saw the potential of greater visual impact. To some extent this style became hackneyed, as when the camera operator would wiggle the camera around, simulating amateurish handheld operation to get "that honest feel" or to make a talking head somehow visually stimulating. Still, handheld camera allows you to shoot from the best angle you can, while making the viewer feel like they are right in the middle of everything. It makes most of the earlier porno scenes seem visually boring by comparison.
